kissing the flint – creating sparks

Multi-award nominated international singer-songwriter Leah Jett is an Australian-brewed artist, Scottish-distilled since 2020 where she has been based in her father’s native land. Leah created Kissing The Flint (translation: creating a spark) to cut through the fakery of the modern world. Fueled by an authentic, adventurous spirit, powerhouse voice and shape-shifting depth of songwriting alchemy, she captivates audiences with heartfelt stories and vivid imagery, softness and sass – moving easily from melodic, roots beauty to empowered rock raunch, one mesmerising moment to the next.

PRESS / TESTIMONIALS

“Enthralling sound, evocative lyrics and commanding vocals.” (Jyla Blog)

“Hailing from Queensland, Australia, but now based in Scotland, Kissing The Flint curbs her love for steampunk and rockabilly into feisty, genre-diverse music. Numerous rave reviews, energetic live shows and multi-award nominations prove she is not one to be ignored.” (Nicole Mendes, The Other Side Reviews)

“Citing Patti Smith, Chrissie Hynde and Stevie Nicks among her influences, Kissing The Flint is on a mission
to resurrect female rock’n’roll, one banger at a time.”
(Marilu Ciabattoni, Lost In the Manor)

“Kissing The Flint is an artist adept at crafting immersive tales that delve deepinto the complexities of human emotions and relationships. Drawing inspiration from powerful, resilient feminine narratives, Leah’s music creates a tableau of intense passion, formidable power dynamics, and raw emotions. Her songwriting skilfully oscillates between strength and vulnerability, presenting listeners with evocative scenarios that both entertain and resonate. With every track, she challenges you to not just hear, but feel, question, and introspect, making her one of the most compelling artists in the contemporary music scene.” (Testing Melodies)

The beginning of May marks Beltane, the midpoint between the spring equinox and summer solstice, and also celebrating fertility, rebirth, and the changing seasons with bonfires, flower decorations, and community gatherings, bridging ancient pagan traditions with modern celebrations. Not least 'The Wickerman'! This image, captured at Trevor Leat's imposing wicker sculpture 5 minutes from where our band rehearses and with a wee twist added, features on the cover of my current album 'Rule The World'.Beltane and other traditions speak deeply to my Celtic roots and beliefs. I wrote a song in I Heart Songwriting Club a year or so ago bearing this title, which is now on the shortlist for my next album which is due to bloom and grow at Unit 7 Studio (Bladnoch) later this year. Here are the lyrics, which I originally composed in raw format with layers of voice and spoken word as a kind of chant, and no other instruments. We have some fabulous plans for it and can't wait to share its full beautiful form with you on the new album!Beltane morningSo far from youDancing alone to the cry of the curlewBeltane morningDawn of SpringWhy aren’t you here with me, my darling?Washed my faceIn the Beltane dewHoping you’d come back to me, if it restored my youthMeadow flowersThrough my hairTwisting like the thoughts you never really caredBeltane mornHere all aloneMight consume me, this fierce desireI write my wishes down, then I cast them into fireMy yearning hands, touching the stonesThis ache for you burning deep down in my bonesBeltane childSo free and wildDandelion, butter-brightEven they know it's time to return to the lightMaypole dancer, my Faerie KingThe love we made last year, did it not mean a thing?Beltane manHelp me understandThe days are long, the sun is highWhy did you disappear without saying goodbye?Scatter the ashesRe-light the flameI’d give anything to hear you say my nameOn BeltaneTo feel your flameOn BeltaneWhisper my nameOn BeltanePlease stop the painLet me feel your flameOn BeltaneOn Beltane © Leah Chynoweth-Tidy ...
